Callum paced around his room. He couldn’t get his attention to focus on any one thing. The single shoe, Marco’s whereabouts, Emma’s first feeding, where Lendyn was and what she was doing, Devin, Vaughnn talking to him about his mother, Isabella and on and on it went. No matter how he approached it he couldn’t figure out how it all connected.

He rubbed his chin.

He paced.

Rubbed his chin some more.

Paced some more.

Inane behavior was getting him nowhere. Time was ticking. Urgency to solve this puzzle garnering strength with each tick. He flung open the doors to the wardrobe and pulled out the suit. The answer was in it somewhere. Marco was the string, he had to be.

He lay the suit on the bed and ran his hands over every inch of fabric, every stitch.

Think. Think. Think.

Every time he examined this suit his eyes always went back to the lapel. Along the flower hole was a loose stitch.

Just one. Puckered up a half millimeter above the rest of the stitching. Callum scratched at the stitching with his finger unraveling the hem. He slid his finger between layers ripping the top layer and peeling satin away from wool.

There, embroidered in the wool in silver-colored silk thread was a triangle with a cross connecting its three sides—the Wind Watchers symbol?

Look at it like a chessboard.

His right hand gripped the suit jacket as he jumped up. He leapt from his bedroom window climbing down the side of the manor like a lizard.

One back-flip and he was on the ground and moving. It was right there in front of him why the symbol looked so familiar, because he’d seen it the night he’d found Lendyn half-dead inside a sarcophagus.

Callum never understood how he was able to find her that night and he hadn’t questioned it, but he thought about it more and more. He visited the crypt and the cemetery multiple times during Lendyn’s recovery at the hospital. Back then he wasn’t looking for anything except an excuse to stay away.

During that time he used every diversion possible to keep from cowering outside Lendyn’s hospital room, pacing the floor, and being and feeling utterly useless.

Now, he was headed back to the crypt. He remembered seeing the Wind Watchers symbol within a crest of arms embossed into that marble crypt door along with the triangular symbol. Within a fold of ribbon encircling that crest was a motto and he couldn’t remember what it said. He cleared the field. In the distance arising among the tree line he could see the angular roof of the crypt. As he drew closer, a black silhouette of a man formed. Someone was there.

Callum froze.

A hundred yards ahead crouched in front of a gravestone—kneeled Marco. Lendyn’s words crept into his head, “Everything happens for a reason, even if that reason seems unreasonable.”

He wanted to rip Marco’s head off but he also had questions, questions he thought Marco had answers to. Lendyn encountered Marco after leaving Zach’s wedding and she’d left that meeting alive, leaving Callum to wonder how.
